I’m interested in the sudden switch of allegiance from Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston. It was a mass move in a few days when the Avengers came out. It didnt happen when War Horse came out (both actors appeared in the film and at the premiere all the screams were for Benedict). Also it didnt happen when Thor came out in 2011 even though Tom got a lot of attention.
There’s a high percentage of kids on the site and teenagers are known for changing allegiances but the move is even more than you’d expect (even with Marvels’ pr machine churning out article and interviews with Hiddleston by the minute). You’d expect some movement between fanbases particularly when someone/something takes off on tumblr but this has been brutal.
I think the sudden extreme swing is more to do with latest set of press on Benedict which has focused on his unique looks. There’s been a lot of ridicule and articles querying why fans would find him attractive.
Perhaps fans grew tired of having to continually justify when they were attracted to him It feels like some have relented and decided to conform and support another craze on tumblr that seems easier to justify. Its not very rock and roll but maybe young fans want to conform as much as anyone.
